################################################################################## # 2020/04/27 - PsychOS486 0.0.7 - Another look at TinyCore and possible codename # ################################################################################## I'm currently trying to find other "flavors" of Slackware to use for respinning (remastering). I thought perhaps using Slackware 14.2 and then replacing all of the i586 software with i486 ones and then try to run the 'liveslak' scripts would be an option, which is not included with 14.2 like I thought, which makes sense given that Slackware 14.2 is either "source" or "installer." SlaxEx = nope Slackel = nope; even the 2014 Fluxbox version is i586; it's a Greek distro Salix Live = nope; Slax = nope; 4.2.0 is the only one that will boot on an i486 and there aren't any respin tools or even an installer. This might sound strange but I may be using TinyCore (CorePlus) version 11.1 that just came out and not that long ago because, for whatever reason, it will boot on an i486, or at least according to QEMU and it is using linux kernel 5.x. TinyCore does use special .tcz packages, which limits the amount of software I can include, but maybe it will force me to be more mindful and possibly explore another package type and place the files in the correct directories manually. First thing I would need to do is install it on a laptop, add a few programs, run 'ezremaster', and the run the ISO with QEMU and see if the installed software will still run as sometimes people will supply i586 and i696 instead of i486. I think I saw the package manager list GIMP 2.10 and I'll try that and see what happens, but I doubt it. I think I just came up with a great code name for the first release of PsychOS486 and that is "Hindsight" because hindsight is 20-20 (2020). Get it? I think it is clever, anyway. According to tinycorelinux.net's FAQ page, to make the system more GNU compatible, use the 'appbrowser' and select 'coreutils.tcz' and 'util-linux.tcz' to replace 'busybox'. According to https://mirrors.dotsrc.org/tinycorelinux/overiew.html, the minimum requirements: CPU-i486DX RAM-48MB CD Drive Wired Internet Connection TinyCore CD ...However, 128MB for 11.1 is more realistic (or at least for CorePlus), though I have no true conformation yet if it will actually run on an i486 because I'm currently limited to QEMU.
