############################################################## # PsychOS 04/11/2016 - PsychOS XFCE Edition and PsychOS 2.3.0 # ############################################################## * An experiment was done in an attempt to create an XFCE Edition of PsychOS (XFCE only). It initially worked, but xconsole kept running at startup and there were xserver related issues; so, the project was abandoned. LightDM was installed; however, a very minimalistic login screen was presented. It worked up until the third build of PsychOS XFCE Edition (removal of packages); afterwards, the login was just looping itself. * I tried installing and running both the latest stable version of Vivaldi 1.0 and Dillo web browser. Vivaldi takes forever to load and Dillo doesn't load at all; neither are worth shipping with PsychOS. * PsychOS 2.3.0 was created with packages added in the attempt to make printer setup easier; it did not. However, a few packages were added in regards to plugins and codecs for already installed apps. Issues as of date: --------- - The volume indicator is missing. [] Issue fixed by adding "Audio Mixer" to the panel. - Suspend on lid close fails (may need to restart). [] Issue was fixed after changing settings and a restart. - Need to test battery life. * It's looking as though having an XFCE -only edition of PsychOS is impossible using OpenSUSE Studio. * As many of the *-branding-opensuse packages were removed as possible; this fixed the annoying and very limited panel placement and dock settings. Most distributions have panel placement and a makeshift dock capability via the xfce4-panel package; OpenSUSE Studio'sdefault "branding" packages prevent this. * Many nonfree packages were added to PsychOS; an agreement will have to be presented before a download is available. * Need to lookup the licenses associated with each nonfree package and see what one usually agrees to before installation on other distributions. Because PsychOS is strictly built for research and is on a research site with what will hopefully have a nonprofit account, hopefully everything will be ok. * I've tried to build PsychOS with GPL-like only packages, but it seems as though it is impossible; I wish I knew how Ubuntu does it when it clearly ships with an audio and video player. Side-note: ----- I just discovered the world of IRC even though PsychOS has been built with clients for it since the beginning; it may prove useful in all of this.
